Nachtjagdgruppe 10

Nachtjagdgruppe 10 is not an entirely unfamiliar term for those interested in the history of night aerial combat over Europe. Some of its aircraft are relatively popular modeling subjects. However, not much has been written about the history of this unit. In issue 05/2025 of the INFO Eduard magazine, I briefly attempted to summarize the formation and activities of this unit.

Nachtjagdrguppe 10 není pro zájemce o historii nočních leteckých bojů nad Evropou úplně neznámým pojmem. Některé její letouny patří mezi poměrně oblíbené modelářské subjekty. July 1941 - Circus Operations and Douglas Bader

Circus operations, launched by the RAF in 1941, demanded considerable effort from British fighter units and failed to achieve its stated objectives. Even Stirling bombers were involved in the Circus operations. At that time, RAF fighter units were still clinging to disadvantageous flight formations, and some commanders insisted on using armament that was no longer adequate for the current fighting. I explore this period in the 04/2025 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Operace Circus, jež RAF spustilo v roce 1941, si vyžádaly značné úsilí na straně britských stíhacích jednotek a nevedly ke stanoveným cílům. Dokonce se do nich během denních operací zapojily i bombardéry Stirling. V té době stíhací jednotky RAF stále lpěly na nevýhodných letových formacích a někteří velitelé lpěli na výzbroji, která už pro aktuální boje nebyla adekvátní. Fokkerpilot Leopold Anslinger

 

In the April issue of the paid magazine Eduard Modeller’s Den, I prepared the historical background for the 1/48 scale model of the Fokker E.III by Danny Clark. Its pilot was Leopold Anslinger, the most successful German fighter pilot on the Eastern Front during the First World War. I was kindly assisted in preparing the article by Petr Aharon Tesař, Greg VanWyngarden, and Eugene Ushakow. Compared to the information published so far about Leopold Anslinger and his brother, mainly in the magazine Over The Front, I have uncovered further details about both aviators from the period after the Great War and during the Second World War.

V dubnovém vydání placeného magazínu Eduard Modelller´s Den jsem připravil historické pozadí k 1/48 modelu Fokkeru E.III z dílny Dannyho Clarka. Jeho pilotem byl nejúspěšnější německý stíhací letec v první světové válce na východní frontě, Leopold Anslinger. S přípravou článku mi laskavě pomohli Petr Aharon Tesař, Greg VanWyngarden a Eugene Ushakow. Oproti dosud publikovaným informacím o Leopoldu Anslingerovi a jeho bratrovi, především v magazínu Over The Front, jsem dohledal další podrobnosti k oběma letcům z období po skončení Velké války a během druhé světové války.

Operation Market Garden & 357th Fighter Group

Readers often associate Operation Market Garden with the airborne assault and ground combat. Somewhat overshadowed by these dramatic events are the air battles over the area, which were crucial for the safety of transport aircraft and for achieving air superiority over the battlefield. The article in issue 04/2025 of INFO Eduard magazine focuses on one of the American fighter units that took part in these battles.

Poněkud v pozadí těchto dramatických událostí stojí letecké boje nad touto oblastí, ve kterých šlo o bezpečnost transportních letounů a vzdušnou převahu nad bojištěm. Kamikaze Tokkōtai

 

In the April 2025 issue of the monthly magazine INFO Eduard, I published an article in collaboration with Martin Ferkl, focusing on special attack units of the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Force, with particular attention to units equipped with Zero fighter aircraft. In the article, we address a number of misconceptions and commonly held errors, including the controversy related to use of the term "Kamikaze."

V článku se věnujeme řadě předsudků a vžitých omylů včetně kontroverze spejené s používáním názvu Kamikaze.

The aerial battles over Normandy in the first days following the invasion in June 1944 focused primarily on operations of fighter-bombers related to attacks on enemy ground forces. German targets continued to be attacked by medium and heavy bombers, but Luftwaffe assaults on these formations were rare. One such encounter took place on June 12 near Rennes.

Letecké boje nad Normandií se v prvních dnech po invazi v červnu 1944 soustředily především na operace stíhacích bombardérů, které souvisely s útoky na pozemní jednotky protivníků. Německé cíle byly nadále napadány středními a těžkými bombardéry, ale útoky Luftwaffe na tyto formace byly vzácné. K jednomu z takových střetnutí došlo 12. června na Rennes.

Flying Knights – 9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group

In the March issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I prepared a somewhat longer text focused on the early combat operations of the 9th FS, 49th FG in Australia during 1942, up until their transfer to New Guinea. In writing the article, I relied on published works by renowned authors who specialize in this theater of war, but I also supplemented the information with operational records from Japanese units. The descriptions of the P-40 profiles in my article and on other pages of this issue were prepared by my colleague Richard Plos. V březnovém vydání magazínu INFO Eduard jsem připravil trochu delší text, který je zaměřen na počátky bojových operací 9th FS, 49th FG v Austrálii během roku 1942 až do přesunu na Novou Guineu. Při zpracování textu jsem se opíral o publikované práce renomovaných autorů, kteří se tomuto bojišti věnují, ale doplňující informace z japonské strany jsem čerpal z operačních záznamů japonských jednotek.
