RUFE: the IJN fighter seaplane - stíhací hydroplán japonského námořního letectva

 

In the 04/2023 issue of INFO Eduard magazine, the first part of my article on the development and combat deployment of the Nakajima A6M2-N seaplane, which was given the Allied code name Rufe, is published. In preparing the text I also used information from publications recently published in Japan, I also worked with records of officers at the Naval Academy in Etajima, and thanks to the support of the Japanese magazine Scale Aviation and its contributors, several previously unpublished photographs taken during combat service will be published in the article, courtesy Mr. Yasuho Izawa. It is not very common with Japanese warplanes, and even less so with the Rufe seaplane. I am also grateful to Ryan Toews for his extensive consultation.

Ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard 04/2023 je zveřejněna první část mého článku o vývoji a nasazení stíhacího hydroplánu Nakajima A6M2-N, který dostal spojenecké kódové označení Rufe. Při přípravě textu jsem využil informace z nedávno vydaných publikací v Japonsku, pracoval jsem i se záznamy důstojníků námořní akademie v Etajimě a díky podpoře japonského časopisu Scale Aviation a jeho spolupracovníků bude v článku publikováno i několik dosud nezveřejněných fotografií pořízených během bojové služby s laskavou podporou pana Yasuho Izawy. To není u japonských válečných letounů příliš časté a u hydroplánu Rufe je to ještě méně obvyklé. Za rozsáhlé konzultace jsem vděčný také Ryanu Toewsovi.

Bf 110: good or bad fighter airplane? Byla stodesítka dobrá stíhačka nebo ne?

The Bf 110 twin-engine fighter aircraft is one of the legendary airplanes of the Second World War. At the same time, however, it is one of the types that have a reputation as a second-rate day fighter. At least for the first two years of the war, this was not the case. AI GPT warning for aviation enthusiasts ... and for anybody else

 

I tried AI GPT for fun, testing it in few topics I know. Results were seriously bad, I must say that confidence of AI when you double check obvious errors is dangerous. The AI is even on purpose misleading, see below this example:

If a business unit in a larger company is placed under the authority of a head office in a reorganisation, which specialises in different scope of same service, but at the same time wants to tell its new subordinates what to do in detail, it can end badly. This is exactly what happened to the Stuka dive-bomber unit in November 1940. A short article on this subject can be found in the 03/2023 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Night over Würzburg / Noc nad Würzburgem

In the article "Night over Würzburg" in the November issue of Eduard INFO magazine I described the circumstances of the last aerial victory of the German night fighter Wilhelm Johnen. V článku „Noc nad Würzburgem“ v listopadovém vydání magazínu Eduard INFO jsem popsal okolnosti posledního leteckého vítězství německého nočního stíhače Wilhelma Johnena. Surprise over Heesch / Překvapení nad Heeschem

 

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-14/AS, which Piotr Forkasiewicz captured so wonderfully on the Eduard kit boxart, is somewhat mysterious. Apparently it belonged to Luftwaffe fighter unit III/JG 6, you can find out more about it in the Boxart Story published in Eduard INFO magazine in November 2022. See page 27, free download:

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-14/AS, který Piotr Forkasiewicz tak famózně zachytil na boxartu stavebnice firmy Eduard je poněkud záhadný. „Swede“ Vejtasa u Santa Cruz

Stanley Winfield Vejtasa was the only U.S. Navy aviator to receive the Navy Cross for his service as a bomber and fighter pilot. He capped his remarkable career in the 1960s as skipper of the USS Constellation (CV-64) and later as commander of Naval Air Station Miramar (yes, the Top Gun!).

On page 26 of the November issue of Eduard INFO magazine, I discuss his Czech ancestry in more detail, but mainly focus on his incredible performance during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands in October 1942.

Svou pozoruhodnou kariéru završil v šedesátých letech jako kapitán letadlové lodi USS Constellation (CV-64) a později jako velitel Naval Air Station Miramar (ano, jedná se o Top Gun).

Na straně 26 listopadového vydání magazínu Eduard INFO se podrobněji věnuji jeho českým předkům, ale hlavně se zaměřuji na jeho neuvěřitelný výkon během bitvy u ostrovů Santa Cruz v říjnu 1942.
