My article in the August 2024 issue of INFO Eduard magazine covers the first Frantic Shuttle mission, during which the U.S. Air Force operated from Soviet territory. For the pilots of the 325th Fighter Group, this marked their first combat action flying Mustangs, and the surprises didn't end there. The 'Checkertail Clan,' as this fighter group was nicknamed, engaged in a battle with an elite Romanian fighter unit over eastern Romania. The outcome was, in my opinion, more or less a draw.

První „shuttle“ misi Frantic, při níž americké letectvo operovalo ze sovětského území, se věnuji ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard ze srpna 2024. Pro letce z 325th Fighter Group to byla úplně první bojová akce, při níž letěli s Mustangy a překvapením nebyl zdaleka konec. „Checkertail Clan“, jak se této stíhací skupině přezdívalo, se během této operace nad východním Rumunskem střetl s elitní rumunskou stíhací jednotkou a řekl bych, že to dopadlo víceméně nerozhodně.

In the story published in the August 2024 issue of INFO Eduard magazine about the Luftwaffe's fighter unit III./JG 1, I demonstrate the challenges of creating and deploying a new fighter unit in Western Europe during the battle against U.S. bombers and their escorts in 1943-1944. The history of this unit also highlights the significant losses the Luftwaffe suffered both before D-Day and in the months that followed.

V příběhu o stíhací jednotce Luftwaffe III./JG 1 ve cedání magazínu INFO Eduard ze srpna 2024 ukazuji, jak obtížné bylo vytvořit a nasadit novou stíhací jednotku v západní Evropě během boje proti americkým bombardérům a doprovodům v letech 1943/1944. Historie této jednotky také poukazuje na úroveň ztrát, které Luftwaffe utrpěla před dnem D a v následujících měsících.

Helmut Wick – Kommodore JG 2?

Fighter pilot Helmut Wick and his distinctively marked aircraft have become emblematic of the German side in the Battle of Britain, a conflict in which the island kingdom fortunately held its ground. What was Wick's path to becoming a fighter pilot and officer? It was more challenging than one might think. This article provides only a modest glimpse into the documents published by Herbert Ringlstetter and other archival materials available to me from the Bundesarchiv. I will also explore the question of whether Wick was mature enough for the position of Kommodore of JG 2. Additionally, though not covered in this article, the credibility of his air victories warrants further examination.

Stíhací letec Helmut Wick a jeho výrazně označené letouny patří mezi symboly německé strany bitvy o Británii, v níž ostrovní království naštěstí obstálo. Jaká vlastně byla Wickova cesta do kokpitu stíhacího letounu a hodnosti důstojníka? Těžší než by se dalo očekávat. Článek je jen velmi skromným vhledem do podkladů, které zveřejnil Herbert Ringlstetter a do dalších archiválií, které mám k dispozici z Bundesarchivu. Dovolím si nastolit otázku, zda byl Wick na pozici Kommodora JG 2 dostatečně zralý. Další otázkou, pro niž již v článku nebyl prostor, je věrohodnost jeho vzdušných vítězství.

THEY FOUGHT TO REBUILD

V říjnu 2024 firma Eduard vydá limitovanou edici stavebnice Spitfiru Mk.Vb v měřítku 1/48 pod názvem They Fought to Rebuild (Bojovali aby mohli znovu budovat, modifikované heslo 310. peruti). Jedná se o stavebnici, která je zaměřena československé piloty Spitfirů z let 1942 a 1943, v době, kdy sloužili u československého wingu v Exeteru a Ibsley, nebo u britských perutí RAF.

Na projektu jsem sám nijak nepodílel, ale mám z něj velkou radost. Tým kolegů, který na stavebnici pracuje, vybral obtiskové varianty řady československých letců, jejichž příběhy mají přesah i za hranice Česka a Slovenska.

Alois Vašátko a František Peřina se před vstupem do RAF zařadili mezi deset neúspěšnějších es v bitvě o Francii. Alois Vašátko zahynul při srážce s Fw 190 z JG 2. Pan Peřina se po emigraci z poválečného komunistického Československa do USA podílel na kosmickém programu v rámci projektu Gemini a na vývoji Boeingu 747. Když jsem jej po roce 1990 viděl na společné autogramiádě s Güntherem Rallem, vyjádřil se o německém kolegovi, že v bitvě o Francii by ho sundal raz dva, protože byl zelený jak sedma!

Kniha Františka Louckého, jež vyšla pod cenzurou během sovětské okupace, patřila mezi vzácné příležitosti nahlédnout do světa našich letců ve Velké Británii.

S Ladislavem Světlíkem, jenž na sklonku života bydlel na Novém Zélandu, jsem měl tu čest vyměnit si řadu dopisů, když jsem s ním a Georgem Kiefnerem z JG 26 spolupracoval na popisu jejich souboje z 23. března 1944 nad Belgií. Aby se pan Světlík po komunistickém puči dostal z Československa, unesl letadlo Československých aerolinií.

A nakonec nejde nezmínit Františka Fajtla. Jeho knihy o bojích v RAF i na východní frontě přivedly k zájmu o leteckou historii nejen české a slovenské čtenáře, ale i řadu dalších lidí z okolních zemí. Nikdy nezapomenu na velké dioráma povstaleckého letiště ze Slovenska z roku 1944, které vytvořili němečtí modeláři inspirováni právě knihou pana Fajtla.

Grafiku jsem si poněkud amatérsky vytvořil sám z čistého nadšení, takže mé očividné nedostatky odpusťte.

In October 2024, the company Eduard will release a limited edition model kit of the Spitfire Mk.Vb in 1/48 scale under the name They Fought to Rebuild (modified motto of No. 310 Sq). This kit focuses on Czechoslovak pilots who flew Spitfires in 1942 and 1943, during their service with the Czechoslovak wing in Exeter and Ibsley, or with British RAF squadrons.

Although I didn't personally contribute to the project, I am very pleased with it. The team of colleagues working on the kit selected decal variants representing a number of Czechoslovak pilots, whose stories resonate beyond the borders of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Alois Vašátko and František Peřina were among the top ten aces in the Battle of France before joining the RAF. Alois Vašátko died in a collision with an Fw 190 from JG 2. After emigrating from post-war communist Czechoslovakia to the USA, František Peřina contributed to the space program as part of the Gemini project and was involved in the development of the Boeing 747. When I saw him at a joint autograph session with Günther Rall after 1990, he commented on his German colleague, saying that during the Battle of France, he would have shot him down in no time because he was as green as grass!

František Loucký’s book, published under censorship during the Soviet occupation, was one of the rare opportunities to gain insight into the world of our pilots in Great Britain.

I had the honor of exchanging several letters with Ladislav Světlík, who lived in New Zealand in his later years, when I was working with him and George Kiefner from JG 26 on describing their dogfight from March 23, 1944, over Belgium. To escape Czechoslovakia after the communist coup, Mr. Světlík hijacked a Czechoslovak Airlines plane.

And finally, it’s impossible not to mention František Fajtl. His books about the battles in the RAF and on the Eastern Front sparked an interest in aviation history not only among Czech and Slovak readers but also among many others from neighboring countries. I will never forget the large diorama of a Slovak National Uprising airfield in from 1944, created by German modelers inspired by Mr. Fajtl's book.
