GEORG AMON, 7./JG 53 & SEEMANN

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 with the painting of a little figure in a boat and the inscription Seemann is, for some reason, one of the most popular decal options among modelers. During the summer of 1943, this aircraft served with 7./JG 53 “Pik As” in Sicily, and its pilot was twenty-three-year-old Uffz. Georg Amon. Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 s osobním markingem v podobě postavičky v loďce a nápisem Seemann patří mezi modeláři z nějakého důvodu mezi nejoblíbenější obtiskové varianty tohoto válečného stroje. Během léta 1943 byl tento letoun ve výzbroji 7./JG 53 „Pik As“ na Sicílii a jeho pilotem byl třiadvacetiletý Uffz. Georg Amon. James Howard, 354th Fighter Group and Medal of Honor

 “Jimmy” Howard was an exceptional aviator and commander who served in both the United States Navy and the U.S. Army Air Forces. Very few men could claim service in both of these branches. Moreover, this modest individual was awarded the United States’ highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, becoming the only fighter pilot to receive it for actions in Western Europe. „Jimmy“ Howard byl výjimečným letcem a velitelem, který prošel službou u amerického námořního i armádního letectva. Službou u obou těchto ozbrojených složek se mohl pochlubit jen málokdo. Navíc tento skromný muž obdržel nejvyšší americké vyznamenání, Medaili cti, jako jediný stíhací letec v západní Evropě. In the July 2025 issue of INFO Eduard magazine, in connection with the box art by Antonis Karydis, I describe the circumstances under which two Messerschmitt Bf 110 crews ended up interned in Sweden in the far north, and the fate that befell one of their pilots. This unit fought simultaneously against both British airmen and Soviet opponents.

Ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard 07/2025 v souvislosti s boxartem Antonise Karydise popisuji okolnosti, za kterých se na dálném severu dostaly do švédské internace dvě osádky Messerschmittů Bf 110 a jaký osud potkal jednoho z jejích pilotů. Tato jednotka bojovala současně jak proti britským letcům, tak i proti sovětským protivníkům.

Tsukuba Kōkūtai

The aircraft of the Japanese Naval Air Group Tsukuba (Tsukuba Kaigun Kōkūtai) are probably known to many modelers because of the distinctive "Tsu" character on tails. This training Kōkūtai underwent several organizational changes during its service. Toward the end of the war, it formed a fighter unit for homeland defense as well as several kamikaze units. A new publication on its fighter squadron was recently released in Japan, which is, as far as I know, the first historical work dedicated to this important training unit. Outside of Japan, my article in INFO Eduard magazine 07/2025 is the first attempt at a brief historical summary of the Tsukuba Kōkūtai. I would like to thank my colleague Martin Ferkl for his assistance in preparing the text.

Letouny japonské námořní letecké skupiny Tsukuba (Tsukuba Kaigun Kōkūtai) patrně řada modelářů zná díky charakteristickému znaku „Tsu“ na svislých ocasních plochách. Tato výcviková Kōkūtai prošla během své služby řadou organizačních změn. V závěru války ze svých řad vyčlenila stíhací jednotku pro obranu mateřských ostrovů a také několik jednotek kamikaze. Nedávno o její stíhací peruti v Japonsku vyšla nová publikace, která je, pokud je mi známo, první historickou prací, která se této významné výcvikové jednotky týká. Nachtjagdgruppe 10 is not an entirely unfamiliar term for those interested in the history of night aerial combat over Europe. Some of its aircraft are relatively popular modeling subjects. However, not much has been written about the history of this unit. In issue 05/2025 of the INFO Eduard magazine, I briefly attempted to summarize the formation and activities of this unit.

Nachtjagdrguppe 10 není pro zájemce o historii nočních leteckých bojů nad Evropou úplně neznámým pojmem. Některé její letouny patří mezi poměrně oblíbené modelářské subjekty. July 1941 - Circus Operations and Douglas Bader

Circus operations, launched by the RAF in 1941, demanded considerable effort from British fighter units and failed to achieve its stated objectives. Even Stirling bombers were involved in the Circus operations. At that time, RAF fighter units were still clinging to disadvantageous flight formations, and some commanders insisted on using armament that was no longer adequate for the current fighting. I explore this period in the 04/2025 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Operace Circus, jež RAF spustilo v roce 1941, si vyžádaly značné úsilí na straně britských stíhacích jednotek a nevedly ke stanoveným cílům. Dokonce se do nich během denních operací zapojily i bombardéry Stirling. V té době stíhací jednotky RAF stále lpěly na nevýhodných letových formacích a někteří velitelé lpěli na výzbroji, která už pro aktuální boje nebyla adekvátní.
