Josef Pöhs & Wolfgang Späte – Jagdgeschwader 54 “Grünherz“

The lives of military aviators can sometimes be remarkably complex and closely intertwined. The Austrian Josef Pöhs and the German Wolfgang Späte are a case in point. Both had family ties to what is now the Czech Republic, and they were brought together by their service with II./JG 54. This subsequently led them to collaborate on the development of the revolutionary Me 163 Komet rocket-powered aircraft. One of them did not live to see the end of the war. In the May 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I explore some of the lesser-known facts associated with these two airmen.

Osudy vojenských letců mohou být někdy značně spletité a vzájemně provázané. Rakušan Josef Pöhs a Němec Wolfgang Späte patří právě do této skupiny. Oba měli rodinné vazby v dnešní České Republice a svedla je dohromady společná služba u II./JG 54, která následně vedla ke spolupráci obou letců při vývoji revolučního raketového letounu Me 163 Komet. Kōkūtai 721 „Jinrai“

In terms of personnel strength, Kōkūtai 721 was the largest kamikaze air unit. A total of 369 single-seat aircraft pilots and 365 crew members of Betty bombers lost their lives while serving with the unit. Their mission was to employ the rocket-powered MXY-7 Ōka (“cherry blossom”) in combat. Within the limited space afforded by the “Boxart Story” format, I describe the history and organization of this unique Imperial Japanese Navy air group in the May 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Kōkūtai 721 byla počtem personálu největší jednotkou letců Kamikaze. V řadách této jednotky padlo 369 pilotů jednomístných strojů a 365 členů osádek bombardérů Betty. Jejich úkolem totiž bylo v boji použít raketový letoun MXY-7 Ōka (třešňový květ). Ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard z května 2026 na omezeném prostoru, který mi dává koncept „boxart story,“ popisuji historii a strukturu této unikátní letecké skupiny japonského císařského námořnictva.

Wing Commander Robert Stanford Tuck – Rhubarb 28.1.1942

Robert Stanford Tuck became one of the RAF’s ten most successful fighter aces and remains the highest-scoring Allied ace of Jewish descent. His combat career was brought to an end by German anti-aircraft fire during a Rhubarb mission that he had planned on 28 January 1942. In the May 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I describe the details of this mission and the discrepancies between Tuck’s account and that of his wingman.

Robert Stanford Tuck se stal jedním z deseti nejúspěšnějších stíhacích es RAF a současně je nejúspěšnějším spojeneckým esem židovského původu. Jeho bojovou kariéru ukončila německá protiletadlová palba během mise Rhubarb, kterou Tuck naplánoval 28. ledna 1942. Ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard z května 2026 popisuji detaily této mise a rozpory mezi výpovědí Tucka a jeho wingmana.
