Theo Weissenberger was one of the German fighter pilots credited with more than 200 aerial victories. He spent most of his flying career in the cockpit of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and flew the jet-powered Me 262 towards the end of the war. However, he began his combat career as a successful day fighter pilot flying the twin-engined Bf 110. I describe the early stages of his career in the Boxart Story featured in the June 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Josef Pöhs & Wolfgang Späte – Jagdgeschwader 54 “Grünherz“

The lives of military aviators can sometimes be remarkably complex and closely intertwined. The Austrian Josef Pöhs and the German Wolfgang Späte are a case in point. Both had family ties to what is now the Czech Republic, and they were brought together by their service with II./JG 54. This subsequently led them to collaborate on the development of the revolutionary Me 163 Komet rocket-powered aircraft. One of them did not live to see the end of the war. In the May 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I explore some of the lesser-known facts associated with these two airmen.

Kōkūtai 721 „Jinrai“

In terms of personnel strength, Kōkūtai 721 was the largest kamikaze air unit. A total of 369 single-seat aircraft pilots and 365 crew members of Betty bombers lost their lives while serving with the unit. Their mission was to employ the rocket-powered MXY-7 Ōka (“cherry blossom”) in combat. Within the limited space afforded by the “Boxart Story” format, I describe the history and organization of this unique Imperial Japanese Navy air group in the May 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Wing Commander Robert Stanford Tuck – Rhubarb 28.1.1942

Robert Stanford Tuck became one of the RAF’s ten most successful fighter aces and remains the highest-scoring Allied ace of Jewish descent. His combat career was brought to an end by German anti-aircraft fire during a Rhubarb mission that he had planned on 28 January 1942. In the May 2026 issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I describe the details of this mission and the discrepancies between Tuck’s account and that of his wingman.

12th Bomb Group The Earthquakers

The box art created by Gareth Hector for a kit released by Eduard in a limited edition, in cooperation with HKM, depicts a B-25 gunship from the 12th Bombardment Group during an attack on a Burmese airfield in 1945. GEORG AMON, 7./JG 53 & SEEMANN

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 with the painting of a little figure in a boat and the inscription Seemann is, for some reason, one of the most popular decal options among modelers. During the summer of 1943, this aircraft served with 7./JG 53 “Pik As” in Sicily, and its pilot was twenty-three-year-old Uffz. Georg Amon. James Howard, 354th Fighter Group and Medal of Honor

 “Jimmy” Howard was an exceptional aviator and commander who served in both the United States Navy and the U.S. Army Air Forces. Very few men could claim service in both of these branches. Moreover, this modest individual was awarded the United States’ highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, becoming the only fighter pilot to receive it for actions in Western Europe. Tsukuba Kōkūtai

The aircraft of the Japanese Naval Air Group Tsukuba (Tsukuba Kaigun Kōkūtai) are probably known to many modelers because of the distinctive "Tsu" character on tails. This training Kōkūtai underwent several organizational changes during its service. Toward the end of the war, it formed a fighter unit for homeland defense as well as several kamikaze units. A new publication on its fighter squadron was recently released in Japan, which is, as far as I know, the first historical work dedicated to this important training unit. Outside of Japan, my article in INFO Eduard magazine 07/2025 is the first attempt at a brief historical summary of the Tsukuba Kōkūtai. Nachtjagdgruppe 10 is not an entirely unfamiliar term for those interested in the history of night aerial combat over Europe. Some of its aircraft are relatively popular modeling subjects. July 1941 - Circus Operations and Douglas Bader

Circus operations, launched by the RAF in 1941, demanded considerable effort from British fighter units and failed to achieve its stated objectives. Even Stirling bombers were involved in the Circus operations. At that time, RAF fighter units were still clinging to disadvantageous flight formations, and some commanders insisted on using armament that was no longer adequate for the current fighting. I explore this period in the 04/2025 issue of INFO Eduard magazine.

Fokkerpilot Leopold Anslinger

 

In the April issue of the paid magazine Eduard Modeller’s Den, I prepared the historical background for the 1/48 scale model of the Fokker E.III by Danny Clark. Its pilot was Leopold Anslinger, the most successful German fighter pilot on the Eastern Front during the First World War. I was kindly assisted in preparing the article by Petr Aharon Tesař, Greg VanWyngarden, and Eugene Ushakow. Compared to the information published so far about Leopold Anslinger and his brother, mainly in the magazine Over The Front, I have uncovered further details about both aviators from the period after the Great War and during the Second World War.

Operation Market Garden & 357th Fighter Group

Readers often associate Operation Market Garden with the airborne assault and ground combat. Somewhat overshadowed by these dramatic events are the air battles over the area, which were crucial for the safety of transport aircraft and for achieving air superiority over the battlefield. The aerial battles over Normandy in the first days following the invasion in June 1944 focused primarily on operations of fighter-bombers related to attacks on enemy ground forces. German targets continued to be attacked by medium and heavy bombers, but Luftwaffe assaults on these formations were rare. One such encounter took place on June 12 near Rennes.

Letecké boje nad Normandií se v prvních dnech po invazi v červnu 1944 soustředily především na operace stíhacích bombardérů, které souvisely s útoky na pozemní jednotky protivníků. Flying Knights – 9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group

In the March issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I prepared a somewhat longer text focused on the early combat operations of the 9th FS, 49th FG in Australia during 1942, up until their transfer to New Guinea. In writing the article, I relied on published works by renowned authors who specialize in this theater of war, but I also supplemented the information with operational records from Japanese units.
