Even eight decades after the Second World War, the production of Luftwaffe aircraft using the slave labour of concentration camp prisoners is a taboo topic among aviation historians. Using the example of one part of the subcontracting system of the Regensburg aircraft factory, this article shows the horrific scale of this Nazi production machine.

Günther Lützow, Jagdgeschwader 3, 1941

 

In the article The Tenacious Adversary, I focused on a short period in the history of Jagdgeschwader 3, which in the summer of 1941, under the command of Günther Lützow, covered the advance of German troops towards Kyiv. However, the fighting with the Soviet air force proved more difficult than the German command had expected.

V článku Houževnatý protivník jsem se zaměřil na krátký úsek v historii Jagdgeschwader 3, která v létě 1941 pod velením Günthera Lützowa kryla postup německých vojsk směrem na Kyjev. Boje se sovětským letectvem se však ukázaly jako těžší, než německé velení čekalo.

Kurfürst – Messerschmitt Bf 109 K-4

In the September issue of the INFO Eduard magazine we prepared an article about the last combat deployed version of the ´109 together with Vladimír Šulc. My co-author concentrated on the development of this version and I prepared a section on the combat deployment in the Luftwaffe and three other air forces and briefly summarized the issue of camouflage of these aircraft, which were produced under emergency conditions in the last nine months of the war.

Vláďa se v textu soustředil na vývoj této verze a já jsem připravil část, která se věnuje bojovému nasazení v Luftwaffe i třech dalších letectvech a stručně jsem shrnul problematiku kamuflování těchto letounů, jež byly vyráběny v nouzových podmínkách v posledních devíti měsících války.

Jochen Marseille´s 100th

 

“Jochen” Marseille was the most successful German fighter pilot to fight against the Western Allies. In terms of current knowledge, which comes from the study of archival documents, it appears that the credibility of his claimed victories was extremely high. This is well illustrated by the circumstances of the air battle in which this legendary pilot won his 100th victory.

„Jochen“ Marseille byl nejúspěšnějším německým stíhačem, který bojoval proti západním Spojencům. Z hlediska současných poznatků, který vyplývají ze studia archivních dokumentů vyplývá, že věrohodnost jeho nárokovaných vítězství byla extrémně vysoká. Dobře je to patrné na okolnostech boje, v němž tento legendární pilot získal své 100. vítězství.

Tainan Kōkūtai vs B-17s

In the August issue of the INFO Eduard magazine, together with my colleague Jan Zdiarský, we prepared an article that not only covers the specific battle of the legendary Tainan Kōkūtai with a formation of four-engine Boeing B-17 bombers, but Jan also described the differences in the way these giant machines were deployed in Europe and the Pacific. Jan is an esteemed member of the 100th Bomb Group (Heavy) Foundation and knows so much about the subject that he lectures in the US.

First winter of JG 54 in Russia / První zima JG 54 v Rusku

 

In the spring of 1942, the Germans on the Eastern Front recapitulated the beginning of the attack on the USSR, which was to be over by winter. It was the experience of the first winter in Russia that the fighter unit JG 54 “Grünherz” also recapitulated. The archival documents of this unit provide a detailed insight into the winter fighting. On the subject of Adam Tooby's boxart, I published an article in the magazine INFO Eduard07/2023.

Na jaře 1942 Němci na východní frontě rekapitulovali počátek útoku na SSSR, který měl skončit do zimy. Právě zkušenosti z první zimy v Rusku rekapitulovala také stíhací eskadra JG 54 „Grünherz“. Archivní dokumenty této jednotky přináší detailní vhled do zimních bojů. K boxartu Adama Toobyho jsem na toto téma publikoval článek v magazínu INFO Eduard 07/2023.

Hickam Field Zero

The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the milestones of world history and is made up of many big and small stories. One of them is the raid on Hickam Field and the fate of the Zero, which ended up in a nearby street as a wreck with a dead pilot on board.

Útok na Pearl Harbor je jedním z milníků světových dějin a skládá se z mnoha velkých i malých příběhů. Jedním z nich je nálet na základnu Hickam Field a osud Zera, které po útoku skončilo v nedaleké ulici jako vrak s mrtvým pilotem na palubě.
