Flying Knights – 9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter Group

In the March issue of INFO Eduard magazine, I prepared a somewhat longer text focused on the early combat operations of the 9th FS, 49th FG in Australia during 1942, up until their transfer to New Guinea. In writing the article, I relied on published works by renowned authors who specialize in this theater of war, but I also supplemented the information with operational records from Japanese units. The descriptions of the P-40 profiles in my article and on other pages of this issue were prepared by my colleague Richard Plos. I would like to thank my colleague Alena Čechová for her assistance in processing Japanese sources. V březnovém vydání magazínu INFO Eduard jsem připravil trochu delší text, který je zaměřen na počátky bojových operací 9th FS, 49th FG v Austrálii během roku 1942 až do přesunu na Novou Guineu. Při zpracování textu jsem se opíral o publikované práce renomovaných autorů, kteří se tomuto bojišti věnují, ale doplňující informace z japonské strany jsem čerpal z operačních záznamů japonských jednotek. 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group

World War II gave rise to many unusual situations, events, and units. Among these was the Connecticut National Guard's reconnaissance aviation unit, which ultimately achieved over 70 confirmed aerial victories on the Chinese battlefield.

At the end of October 1942, the German fighter unit I./JG 77 reinforced the Axis formations fighting at El Alamein. The experience of one of its pilots, Horst Schlick, illustrates the dynamic situation in which the combat units on both sides found themselves.

VC-92 vs. Kamikaze

The first day of Japan's Operation Kikusui, during the American landing on Okinawa, made history as the largest deployment of Kamikaze airmen against Allied vessels. Pilots from the VC-92 unit, flying FM-2 fighter aircraft from the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay, engaged the enemy in aerial combat for the first time, pushing themselves to the limit. První den japonské operace Kikusui během amerického vylodění na Okinawě se do historie zapsal nejrozsáhlejším nasazením letců Kamikaze proti spojeneckým plavidlům. Piloti stíhacích letounů FM-2 jednotky VC-92 z eskortní letadlové lodi USS Petrof Bay se poprvé střetli s nepřítelem v leteckém boji. FRANTIC 1

My article in the August 2024 issue of INFO Eduard magazine covers the first Frantic Shuttle mission, during which the U.S. Air Force operated from Soviet territory. For the pilots of the 325th Fighter Group, this marked their first combat action flying Mustangs, and the surprises didn't end there. The 'Checkertail Clan,' as this fighter group was nicknamed, engaged in a battle with an elite Romanian fighter unit over eastern Romania. The outcome was, in my opinion, more or less a draw.

První „shuttle“ misi Frantic, při níž americké letectvo operovalo ze sovětského území, se věnuji ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard ze srpna 2024. Pro letce z 325th Fighter Group to byla úplně první bojová akce, při níž letěli s Mustangy a překvapením nebyl zdaleka konec. „Checkertail Clan“, jak se této stíhací skupině přezdívalo, se během této operace nad východním Rumunskem střetl s elitní rumunskou stíhací jednotkou a řekl bych, že to dopadlo víceméně nerozhodně.

In the story published in the August 2024 issue of INFO Eduard magazine about the Luftwaffe's fighter unit III./JG 1, I demonstrate the challenges of creating and deploying a new fighter unit in Western Europe during the battle against U.S. bombers and their escorts in 1943-1944. The history of this unit also highlights the significant losses the Luftwaffe suffered both before D-Day and in the months that followed.

V příběhu o stíhací jednotce Luftwaffe III./JG 1 ve cedání magazínu INFO Eduard ze srpna 2024 ukazuji, jak obtížné bylo vytvořit a nasadit novou stíhací jednotku v západní Evropě během boje proti americkým bombardérům a doprovodům v letech 1943/1944. Historie této jednotky také poukazuje na úroveň ztrát, které Luftwaffe utrpěla před dnem D a v následujících měsících.
