The last of the six / Poslední ze šesti

 

On the cover of October 2022 edition of Eduard INFO magazine is Zero Model 32 „T2-169“ of Kōkūtai 204. Leading Seaman Yanagiya made several operational flights with this plane during April 1943. He also flew with this aircraft on April 18, 1943, while escorting Admiral Yamamoto to Ballale on Bougainville Island. The formation of two G4M Betty bombers and six Zeros was surprisingly attacked by P-38 fighters, both Bettys were shot down and Admiral Yamamoto was killed. Five of the six Japanese escort fighters were killed in action during the war, one of them being the second ranking naval ace, Shō-ichi Sugita (80 v.).

The only survivor of the war would be Yanagiya. Born in March 1919, after completing flight training in March 1942 he was assigned to the 6th Kōkūtai, which was to be based at the captured Midway Atoll. From October 1942 he was deployed to Rabaul and in November his unit was redesignated Kōkūtai 204. In May 1943 he was promoted to Petty Officer 2nd Class, but on June 7 he was severely wounded in aerial combat off Russell Island and had to have his right arm amputated. After hospitalization and rehabilitation, he was able to continue flying with a prosthesis and served as an instructor until the end of the war. He achieved a total of eight individual victories and participated on eighteen shared kills. Kenji Yanagiya died in February 2008.

Na obálce vydání magazínu Eduard INFO z října 2022 je zobrazeno Zero Model 32 s označením „T2-169“ z Kōkūtai 204. Během dubna 1943 s ním několikrát podnikl operační let vrchní námořník Yanagiya. Letěl s ním také 18. dubna 1943 při doprovodu admirála Yamamota do Ballale na ostrově Bougainville. Formace dvou

bombardérů G4M Betty a šesti Zer byla překvapivě napadena stíhačkami P-38, obě Betty byly sestřeleny a admirál Yamamoto zahynul. Pět z šesti doprovodných japonských stíhačů během války postupně padlo v boji, jedním z nich byl druhý nejúspěšnější námořní stíhač Shō-ichi Sugita (80 vítězství). Jediný, kdo válku přežil, byl Yanagiya. Narodil se v březnu 1919 a po ukončení leteckého výcviku v březnu 1942 byl zařazen k 6. Kōkūtai, která měla mít základnu na dobytém atolu Midway. Od října 1942 byl nasazen v Rabaulu a v listopadu byla jeho jednotka přeznačena na Kōkūtai 204. V květnu 1943 byl povýšen na poddůstojníka 2. třídy, ale 7. června byl v leteckém boji u Russelova ostrova těžce zraněn a musela mu být amputována pravá ruka. Po hospitalizaci a rehabilitaci mohl dál létat s protézou a do konce války sloužil jako instruktor. Dosáhl celkem osmi samostatných vítězství a podílel se na dalších osmnácti.
