332nd Fighter Group The Red Tails vs. Geschwader Boelcke

Perhaps the most famous unit of African American soldiers fighting in World War II is the 332nd Fighter Group, known as the "Red Tails." In the June 2021 issue of the magazine INFO Eduard, I focus on two battles involving this fighter unit from the end of the war in Europe. In both cases, this American unit successfully engaged with the fighters of the Geschwader Boelcke. One encounter resulted in the unit's highest daily score, while the other resulted in a murder of one of the American pilots.

Patrně nejznámější jednotkou černých Američanů, bojující v druhé světové válce, je 332nd Fighter Group „Red Tails“. Ve vydání magazínu INFO Eduard z června 2021 se věnuji dvěma bojům této stíhací jednotky z konce války v Evropě. V obou případech se tato americká jednotka úspěšně střetla se stíhači z Geschwader Boelcke. Jeden přinesl nejvyšší denní skóre této jednotky, avšak druhý vraždou jednoho z amerických letců.

Combat over Lavansaari / Souboj u Lavansaari

The I-153 fighter biplanes remained in day operations until mid-1943 and managed to cause unpleasant surprises to the enemy. On one day in May 1943, several combat units clashed near Lavansaari Island, and airmen from Germany, Austria, Finland, Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus participated in the fighting. Among them are well-known names such as Klaus Mietusch, Max Stotz and Eino Luukkanen. Stíhací dvouplošníky I-153 se v denních operacích udržely až do poloviny roku 1943 a dokázaly nepříteli způsobit nepříjemná překvapení. Během jednoho květnového dne v roce 1943 se u ostrova Lavansaari střetlo několik bojových jednotek a na bojích se podíleli letci z Německa, Rakouska, Finska, Ruska, Ukrajiny a Běloruska. From Dornier to U-Boot / Z Dornieru na palubu U-Bootu

 

All the major powers fighting in World War II had naval air forces. The German one is probably the least known to this day, as it was de facto part of the Luftwaffe organizational structure. How the German naval officer Oblt. zur See Karl-Franz Heine became the commander of the crew of the Dornier and later the skipper of the submarine you can find out in the article I published in the magazine Eduard INFO 02/2021. Bf 110 units in Battle of Britain / Stodesítky v Bitvě o Británii

The twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110 stands somewhat in the shadow of the glory of other aircraft that took part in the legendary Battle of Britain. While I am not the first author to present the surprising information that it was the most successful fighter aircraft of this battle in terms of the number of victories vs suffered losses, my work with contemporary documents in this article defines an even higher number of victories achieved by Bf 110 crews than previously thought. Nejsem sice první autor, který přináší překvapivou informaci, že v počtu dosažených vítězství se jedná o nejúspěšnější stíhací letoun této bitvy z hlediska poměru vítězství a ztrát, ale díky práci s dobovými dokumenty v článku definuje ještě vyšší počet vítězství dosažených osádkami Bf 110, než se dosud soudilo.
